Safety

  • Clamp the work. Never hold it with one hand while plunging with the other.

  • Both hands on the tool. Keep hands clear of the slot area and the underside of the work.

  • Eye and hearing protection, FFP2 dust mask. No gloves.

  • Unplug for adjustments, blade work, clearing or cleaning. Check the switch is OFF before plugging in.

  • Never block the spring return. Retract fully and wait for the blade to stop before putting the tool down.

  • Stop if it vibrates, the blade wobbles, the plunge sticks or extraction fails.

How to use

  1. Lay out the pieces as assembled. Mark reference faces (the faces that must be flush) and slot centres.

  2. Keep slots ≥ 50 mm from the ends, 100–150 mm apart.

  3. Clamp the piece. Narrow work: clamp a support block so the tool can't rock.

  4. Unplugged: set depth, height and fence angle. Lock everything.

  5. Test on scrap of the same thickness and dry-fit with a biscuit.

  6. Connect extraction, check switch is OFF, plug in.

  7. Line up the centre mark, seat the reference surface firmly. Switch on, let it reach speed.

  8. Plunge smoothly to the stop — no rocking or sliding. Retract fully, switch off, wait for stop.

  9. Cut the matching piece from its reference face with the same setup.

  10. Dry-fit the whole assembly before gluing.

Reference: pick one method and stick to it — either the fence on the work, or the base on a flat bench. Mixing them shifts the slot.

Mitres: set the fence to 45°, check with a square. Test both pieces on scrap; make sure the slot won't break through.

Tips

  • Clean reference surfaces — sawdust under the base changes the height.

  • Biscuits align; they don't fix badly prepared edges.

  • Keep biscuits dry — damp ones swell and won't fit.

  • With water-based glue, wait 24 h before sanding over biscuits, or you'll get dips later.

  • Glue up on workbenches, not machine tables.

Troubleshooting

Problem

Check

Faces not flush

Same reference face, method, set plate, height and locked fence

Cuts vary

Debris, warped work, loose locks, rocking, hose pull

Biscuit too tight

Depth/size, debris, swollen biscuits

Biscuit rocks

Biscuit thickness, blade condition

Burning, hard plunge, poor extraction

Dull blade or blockage — unplug first

Plunge won't return, switch sticks, blade wobbles

Stop, unplug, mark out of use, report

Maintenance

  • Unplug, vacuum the tool, base and vents. Empty the dust bag at half full.

  • No petrol, thinners or alcohol. Don't oil the plunge mechanism.

  • Return the tool, set plate, guide and wrench to the drawer.

  • Replacement blade: Makita B-20644 (Ø100 × 22 mm bore × 4 mm, 6 carbide teeth, ≥ 11,000 rpm). Blade changes: maintainers — inner flange's 22 side faces out.

  • Maintenance and repairs log
