Location | |
Access | No introduction course; ask an experienced member if new to rolling mills |
Flat rolling width | 75 mm |
Roller diameter | 49 mm |
Max. opening | 6.5 mm |
Help | Slack #silversmide |

Materials
Allowed: soft, annealed silver, gold, copper and brass.
Not allowed: tin, lead, soft-solder-contaminated stock, iron, steel or hardened metal. Contamination transfers to other members' work; hard material damages the rollers.
Rinse pickled metal and dry it completely. No acid, flux, moisture or grit on the rollers.
Controls and profiles
Control / area | Function |
|---|---|
Top T-handle, clockwise (from above) | Lowers the top roller, reduces the gap |
Top T-handle, anticlockwise | Raises the top roller, opens the gap |
Side crank | Turns the rollers; turn so the metal is drawn in |
Smooth area | Sheet and texture sandwiches |
V-grooves | Square wire: 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 3.5, 5, 7 mm |
Side attachment | Half-round wire: 1.2, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 mm (7, 8, 9 mm on an accessory roller) |
The mill does not make round wire, and there are no patterned rollers. Groove sizes are nominal. Check which accessories are present before planning a job.
Safety
Safety glasses. No gloves while cranking. Tie back hair and loose clothing.
Stop cranking before adjusting the gap.
Never force the crank, use a handle extension or push jammed stock through. Stop if the mount moves or the crank binds.
Do not tighten the rollers against each other without stock between them.
How to use
Check the mounting, crank and rollers. Report roller damage rather than using the mill.
Wipe excess oil off the rollers. Anneal the stock if needed; rinse and dry it after pickling.
Sheet: close the gap until the roller just touches the sheet, then make a small further reduction. Feed squarely within the flat area and crank smoothly. Measure at both edges and repeat in small steps.
Square wire: start in a groove the stock fits easily. Turn the stock 90° between passes and move to smaller grooves gradually.
Half-round wire: start with annealed square wire slightly narrower than the groove and form it over several small passes.
Texture: sandwich the pattern material and annealed sheet between clean soft copper or brass sheets that extend beyond the work. No steel, sandpaper or hard patterns. Try it on copper scrap first.
Anneal again when the metal stiffens or the crank gets heavy.
Troubleshooting
Symptom | Action |
|---|---|
Crank unusually hard to turn | Stop, open the gap, anneal the stock |
Fins along wire edges or cracked edges | Reduction too large or wrong groove; remove fins away from the mill and clean |
Sheet thicker on one side | Check that it enters straight; report if it persists. Do not adjust the gears. |
Repeating marks on the work | Clean stock and rollers; report roller damage. Never sand the rollers. |
Maintenance
After use: leave the rollers apart and without pressure, wipe them clean and apply a thin film of oil.
Report loose mounting, binding, damaged rollers or missing parts in #silversmide. Gear, bearing and alignment repairs are for maintainers. Test
