Safety

  • Fingers clear of the needle, take-up lever and wheel.

  • Switch off for needle, foot and bobbin changes; unplug for cleaning.

  • Change pattern or width only with the needle out of the fabric.

  • No pins, metal or wet glue under the needle.

  • Pedal HIGH/LOW switch: change only when stopped. LOW is best for practice.

Needle, bobbin and threading

  • Needle: 75/11–90/14 general, 90/14–100/16 heavy fabrics, Janome Blue Tip for fine/stretch. Raise the needle (wheel towards you), switch off, insert fully, flat side back.

  • Bobbin: J bobbin only. Drop it in so it unwinds counter-clockwise seen from above. Thread into slot A, left under the spring, into slot B, leave 150 mm, close the cover.

  • Winding: spool on the pin with cap → top guides → winder tension guide → through the bobbin hole from inside. Spindle right, hold the tail for the first turns, trim, wind. Push the spindle back left before sewing.

  • Upper thread: switch off, raise the foot, take-up lever at the top. Top guide → down the right channel → around → up the left channel → take-up lever → down to the needle-bar guide → needle front to back. Threader: needle up, foot down; not for twin needles.

  • Bring up the bobbin thread: hold the upper tail, turn the wheel towards you one cycle. Both tails 150 mm behind the foot.

How to use

  1. Check cable, pedal, needle and foot.

  2. Switch off; fit needle, bobbin, foot; thread.

  3. Straight stitch: pattern 10, foot A, width 0 (centre), length 1.5–4, tension 2–6. Zigzag: pattern 9.

  4. Turn one cycle by hand. Foot down, sew slowly — let the feed dogs move the fabric.

  5. Lock straight seams with a few reverse stitches.

  6. Needle up, foot up, pull the work back, cut.

  7. Switch off, clean lint, return accessories.

Settings

  • Pattern dial: red marker shows the stitch; chart under the top lid shows width, length and foot.

  • Width on pattern 10 moves the needle: 0 = centre, 6.5 = left.

  • Foot pressure: 3 normal, 2 appliqué, 1 delicate/very stretchy.

  • Tension: higher = tighter. Rethread before adjusting.

Thick seams

Foot A has a black levelling button: needle down at the start, hold the button while lowering the foot, release, sew slowly (p. 39). Don't force the foot or wheel.

Buttonholes

  1. Test on matching fabric and interfacing.

  2. Foot R, button in the holder (max 25 mm), select BH. Tension 1–5, length 0.5–1, width 4–6.5.

  3. Pull the buttonhole lever fully down.

  4. Lower the foot at the start, sew slowly until it returns to the start.

  5. Repeat: needle up, dial BH → 10 → BH.

  6. Push the lever back up when done.

Larger buttons: manual method with foot B (p. 53).

Twin needle: supplied needle, specified patterns only, width 0–2.5 (p. 77).
