Mössner SM/300 / SM/400

General

The machine is shipped ready for connection, packed in a crate or box. When unpacking, carefully remove the wooden braces securing the machine. After removing the four red-marked nuts, lift the crate straight up. Accessories are attached to the machine or packed in a separate box.

Installing the Machine

The machine does not necessarily need to be bolted to a foundation. However, with the table set to 0°, level the machine using a spirit level.

Before connecting the machine electrically, check that the motor’s current type and voltage match the available power supply. Connect the machine to the mains at the terminal box on its rear. Any damage to the paintwork can be touched up with the machine paint supplied.

Lubrication and Maintenance

The machine has only a few lubrication points. It is lubricated and filled with gear oil before leaving the factory. The gearbox holds approximately 1.5 litres of gear oil. Change the oil for the first time after 1,000 operating hours, then every 3,000 hours. The drain plug is underneath the gearbox housing, behind the stepped pulley. The red-marked oil-filler plug is on the front of the gearbox, above the oil-level sight glass. Check the oil level periodically.

The upper wheel bearing is lubricated with special ball-bearing grease. This grease should last approximately 2,000–3,000 operating hours. The air pump is in the lower part of the machine stand; for proper maintenance, add 2–3 drops of machine oil daily. Check and adjust the V-belt drive for the gearbox and air pump from time to time.

See the lubrication diagram on page 4.

Starting and Stopping the Machine

Switch the machine on and off using the foot-operated switch in the lower part of the machine.

For machines fitted with a butt-welding unit and grinding motor, weld saw blades according to the instructions supplied with the welding unit. The hand-operated switch for the grinding motor is below the guarded grinding wheel.

Cutting Speeds

The machine has six cutting speeds, selected by shifting the three-speed gearbox and moving the V-belt on the two-step pulley. Only shift gears when the machine is stopped.

The stated cutting speeds are guidelines. Depending on the material and workpiece, a higher or lower speed may be appropriate.

Saw Guides

The saw guides are among the machine’s most important components and must be used correctly. The machine is supplied with precision blade guides fitted with replaceable, ground and lapped guide inserts with carbide tips.

Blade welds or brazed joints must be exactly the same thickness as the blade to avoid damaging the guide jaws. To replace the inserts, loosen the clamping screws on the guide holders.

Keep the upper felt pin well oiled. It lubricates the blade as it passes through the guide, helping prevent the workpiece from sticking to the blade.

Each machine is supplied as standard with one pair of guide inserts for 6 mm-wide blades. Machines with the straight-cutting attachment are supplied with inserts for 10 mm-wide blades. Use matching inserts in both the upper and lower guides for each blade width. Do not run a narrow blade in inserts intended for a wider blade. For example, a 4 mm blade may be used temporarily with a guide insert intended for a 3 mm blade, but must never be run in an insert intended for a 6 mm blade.

Weight-Feed Attachment

For heavy workpieces and long cuts, use the weight-feed mechanism to reduce the operator’s effort. Engage it by pulling the feed cord; disengage it using the foot lever on the right side of the machine stand. The supplied auxiliary weights can be added for heavy workpieces, greater cutting heights or a faster feed.

Wheel Tyres

The wheels are fitted with built-in hard-rubber tyres. These protect the blade’s cutting edge and set when it is carried around the wheels. Replace the tyres when they are badly worn. They are simply stretched onto the wheels.

Caution: Do not allow the tyres to become oily. Unevenly worn tyres can cause the blade to run off toward the front. When ordering replacements, specify the machine model or wheel diameter.

Optional Accessories

Four-Way Table Adjustment

This attachment allows the table to tilt up to 15° to the right or left, and forward or backward.

To tilt the table right or left, loosen the nut behind the lower table rocker. To tilt it forward or backward, loosen the two front nuts on the upper table rocker. The angle graduations are engraved on the movable rocker sections.

When the table is tilted steeply, move the lower saw-guide clamp downward.

Straight-Cutting Attachment

For straight cuts, use blades as wide as possible—preferably 10–15 mm. After fitting the blade, insert the straight-cutting attachment’s ball-guide rails into the holes in the table.

Feed the workpiece toward the blade by hand or using the weight-feed mechanism. Set the required cutting depth with the depth stop. The fence, with its adjustable length stop, can be set up to 45° in either direction, allowing mitre cuts.

For mitre cuts, begin with only light feed pressure to prevent the blade from wandering as it enters the material. After reaching a depth of 3–4 mm, continue with normal cutting pressure.

Band-Filing Attachment

To convert the machine for band filing, remove the upper saw guide, the lower clamp and the round table insert. Slide the filing attachment (a pin with a rubber roller) into the guide arm. Fit the filing insert, which has a square opening, into the table.

Slide the back guide rail—which connects the two parts and guides the filing band—down from above until it engages with the upper guide.

Pass the filing band through the square opening in the table insert, join it using the bayonet coupling, place it over the wheels and tension it moderately. Set the gearbox lever to 0 and turn the machine through a few revolutions by hand so the band can settle into its running path. Tighten the clamping plate on the upper guide arm, then press the filing band lightly against the back guide rail with the rubber pressure roller.

Do not exceed a filing speed of 36 m/min.

Choosing Saw Blades

For good cutting performance, select a blade suited to the job. Wide blades (10–15 mm) are preferred for straight cuts because they can withstand greater loads. For curved cuts, choose the blade width according to the radius.

The diagram identifies the main motor, grinding motor, welding apparatus, work light, terminal box and motor-protection switch.

  • Ball bearings are lubricated with special ball-bearing grease; the grease lasts approximately 2,000–3,000 operating hours.

  • Air pump: add 2–3 drops of oil daily.

  • Change the gearbox oil for the first time after 1,000 operating hours, then every 3,000 hours.

  • Use gear oil with a viscosity of 15°E (or 113cSt) at 50°C. (e.g. SAE 80W/90 gearbox oil)

  • Gearbox capacity: approximately 1.5 litres.

  • The oil-level sight glass for the auxiliary gearbox is fitted on the SM/400.is
