The course is required because beginner mistakes wear out the stone and machine quickly.
Rules
Always sharpen on a wet stone.
Empty and clean the water trough when done — the stone is damaged by standing in water.
Light pressure; move the tool back and forth across the stone instead of pressing in one spot.

Rough shaping turning tools
The Galvanotechnik ES 160 bench grinder in the Metal room has a Tormek BGM-100 mount for rough-shaping HSS turning tools with the SVD-186, SVS-50 and SVD-110 jigs. Use the TTS-100 to transfer the setting to the T8 for finishing. BGM-100 video
