Drill-bit sharpener — VEVOR MR-13D
The point angle is set to 118° — do not adjust it. Get a demonstration before first use.
Electric sharpener for twist drills Ø3–13 mm. The drill is clamped in a collet holder and guided against an enclosed grinding wheel in fixed fixtures for point angle, lip relief and point splitting.
Installed VEVOR MR-13D with the local station and 118-degree labels
Location | |
Access | Demonstration required before first use |
Drill range | Ø3–13 mm, ordinary two-lip twist drills (HSS) |
Point angle | 118°, fixed — do not adjust |
Help / faults | Slack #metallrummet |
What it can sharpen
Yes: ordinary HSS twist drills, Ø3–13 mm, using the matching collet.
No: carbide/masonry drills, centre drills, step drills, countersinks, taps, end mills, left-hand drills or other special geometries.
Drills ground to a different point angle: use another method, e.g. the Tormek T8 with DBS-22 jig. Never change the 118° setting.
Stations
Station | Function |
|---|---|
1 (left side) | Alignment — positions the drill in the holder before grinding |
2 — GRIND POINT ANGLE (right front) | Grinds the point. Set to 118°, do not adjust |
Top fixtures | Lip relief and point splitting — each has its own indexing pins |
Order of operations: point angle → lip relief → point splitting. The relief and splitting adjustments are for maintainers only.
Safety
Eye and hearing protection. No gloves; secure hair and loose clothing.
Never grind a loose drill or use the wheel freehand. Hold the holder, not the drill.
Light pressure only — forcing it spoils the geometry and overheats the drill.
Keep the enclosure closed; never reach into the grinding ports while powered.
No coolant or liquids near the machine.
Unplug before cleaning or servicing.
How to use
See also manual pp. 8–11 (English).
Check. With power off, inspect the cable, switch, holder, collet and drill.
Fit the drill. Choose the collet for the drill diameter, seat it in the chuck nut at an angle and assemble loosely. Let the drill project about 35 mm, still free to slide and turn.
Align at station 1. Turn the alignment scale fully clockwise, then back to the drill diameter. Put the holder in the fixture, push and rotate the drill gently against the stop, then tighten the nut. Check that the cutting lip is parallel with the slot in the clamping nut; redo if not.
Grind the point at station 2. Switch on and wait ~10 s. Fit the holder slot over the two pins, push in gently and rock within the fixture until the grinding sound stops. Withdraw, rotate to the other lip and repeat.
Lip relief and point splitting (top fixtures), as demonstrated. Do both lips at each station without loosening the drill. At the splitting fixture, return to the centre position before withdrawing.
Inspect. Switch off and wait for the wheel to stop. Check for two equal lips, a centred point and no chipping or blueing. Ask if unsure.
Clean up. Unplug, brush or vacuum the dust (don't blow it with compressed air), and put the collets and holder back.
A drill that has been shortened many times has a thicker web and may need a different alignment-scale setting — ask for help rather than grinding harder.
Troubleshooting
Problem | Action |
|---|---|
Holder won't seat on the pins | Stop. Check fixture, collet assembly and debris. Don't force it. |
Unequal lips or off-centre point | Redo the alignment at station 1. Don't touch the angle settings. |
Drill gets hot or discoloured | Stop and let it cool. Use lighter pressure. |
Vibration, noise, damaged wheel/cable/switch | Stop, unplug, report in #metallrummet. |
Maintenance
Keep collets, holder and fixtures clean — debris changes the geometry.
Wheel replacement, internal service and calibration are maintainer tasks.
