Module 2 โ€” Materials, multi-material printing and the rest of the fleet

Filament 3D Printing ยท Module 2 of 2

  • Prerequisite: Module 1 passed

  • Time: about 45 minutes of reading, then a quiz of 20 questions

๐Ÿšง This course is still being developed, and we'd love your feedback. If something could be clearer, explained better or put another way, select the text and use Comment to tell us right there: the wording, the facts, a rule, anything. A comment on the exact spot is the easiest feedback for us to act on.

Module 1 taught you the room: taking over a printer, loading a spool, slicing, watching the first layer and cleaning up. All of that still applies. Nothing in this module relaxes a Module 1 rule. In particular, filament is always fed the way the room set it up: no rerouted tubes and no external spool holders.

This module uses Module 1's vocabulary (walls, supports, purge, prime tower, AMS, the two X2D nozzles). If any of that is hazy, look back at 1.1 How a 3D printer works, and the words for it, 1.3 The printers and 1.4 Meet the AMS.

What passing Module 2 lets you do

  • Use the four lower-row X2Ds and the materials on their list.

  • Use the two H2S printers, when your job needs their size (2.9 The H2S: use it only when you need it).

  • Print with support material, and with several colours or materials, on every printer you may use, the upper row included. On the upper row, the only support material is Bambu Support for PLA (2.1 What you may print: the allow-list).

  • Use the two filament dryers in the hallway.

  • Fit and use a high-flow 0.8 mm nozzle on an H2S.

How the printers are set up

Keep this table in mind. Most of this module follows from it.

Printer

AMS

Feeds

Build plate

X2D, upper row (4)

AMS 2 Pro, four spools

Left nozzle (main, direct drive)

Cool Plate SuperTack

AMS HT, one spool

Right nozzle (auxiliary, Bowden)

X2D, lower row (4)

AMS 2 Pro, four spools

Left nozzle (main, direct drive)

Textured PEI

AMS HT, one spool

Right nozzle (auxiliary, Bowden)

H2S (2)

AMS 2 Pro, four spools

Its only nozzle

Textured PEI

All eight X2Ds are the same machine, set up the same way. What separates the rows is which plate they use, which materials are allowed, and which module you need.

What is in this module

  1. What you may print: the allow-list

  2. The materials, including filled filaments

  3. The Textured PEI plate, and glue

  4. Support material, and the X2D's second nozzle

  5. Multi-colour printing

  6. AMS auto-refill: a backup spool

  7. Drying filament, and the two dryers

  8. Nozzles

  9. The H2S: use it only when you need it

  10. Faults, clogs, and how far you may go
