Walking-foot sewing machine — Seiko STH-8BLD

Industrial straight-stitch machine with compound (walking-foot) feed — needle, feed dogs and alternating feet move the layers together. For bags, canvas, upholstery and leather. Replaces the old Dürkopp.

Good to know

  • This is the original STH-8BLD (not -2 or -3). The only operator manual available is for the -3; threading and oiling below follow it.

  • Walking feet can mark delicate surfaces — test appearance as well as strength.

  • No documented thickness or speed limit. Test the full stack including seam crossings.

  • Drive: clutch motor. A 750 W servo with needle positioner is planned.

Safety

  • Fingers clear of the needle and walking feet; hair and clothing away from the belt and wheel.

  • Switch off and wait for it to stop before threading or changing needle/bobbin. Unplug for cleaning or tipping the head.

  • Guards in place.

  • Remove pins; no metal in the seam path.

  • Never force a stalled machine or pull the fabric.

Needle and threading

  1. Needle: turn the handwheel towards you to raise it. Insert fully, long groove to the left. Thread the eye left to right.

  2. Upper thread (manual p. 11): raise the take-up lever. Thread stand → upper guides → tension discs → check spring → take-up lever → face guides → needle bar guide → needle.

  3. Bobbin winding (p. 10): thread through the winder guide, bobbin on the shaft, engage the lever. Foot raised while winding. Fills to ~80 %.

  4. Bobbin case (pp. 9–10): power off, open the bed slide, lift the latch to remove the case. Thread through the slot and under the spring, out through the hole at the end. Bobbin turns clockwise seen from the open side when the thread is pulled. Refit fully, close the slide.

  5. Bring up the bobbin thread: hold the upper tail, turn the wheel towards you one cycle. Both tails under the foot to the back.

How to use

  1. Power off: fit needle and bobbin, thread. Turn by hand to check.

  2. Set a moderate stitch length; start at low speed.

  3. Scrap under the foot, hold the tails for the first stitches. Let the feed move the layers.

  4. Check both sides and the seam. Then sew the project.

  5. Test reverse before backtacking a finished seam.

  6. Stop with the take-up lever up, lift the foot, remove the work, cut the tails. Switch off.

Tension and pressure

  • Upper tension nut: right = tighter, left = looser. Small steps; compare scrap samples.

  • Leave the bobbin-case spring alone.

  • Foot pressure: the lowest that still feeds properly. Put it back afterwards.

Troubleshooting

Problem

Check

Loops underneath

Upper thread in the tension discs and take-up lever; hold tails at the start. Then upper tension.

Bobbin thread shows on top

Bobbin threading and case seating; then balance.

Skipped stitches, fraying

DP×17 needle, right size, fully inserted, correct way; threading.

Needle bends or breaks

Pulling the work, stack too thick, needle hitting foot or plate.

Layers creep

Foot down, enough pressure, slower.

Hook stops but motor runs

Switch off. Don't force it — get help.

Noise, heat, smell, electrical problem

Switch off, unplug, report.

Tipping the head

Heavy. Unplug, clear the table and get the tipping demonstrated. Keep hands out of the hinge gap and lower it onto the proper head rest.

Maintenance

  • Power off, brush lint from feed dogs, bed slide and hook area. Don't scratch the hook.

  • Oil system: the machine has reservoirs, wicks and a hook reservoir — never run it dry. The -3 manual says 1–2 drops at arrow-marked points twice daily under continuous use, and hook reservoir to the line (pp. 7–8). Don't adjust oil-flow screws or oil unidentified holes.

  • After a long idle period, have lubrication checked before running.

  • Feed, hook, timing and drive repairs: maintainers only.

  • Needles in stock: DP×17 Nm 125/20; Nm 160/23 for leather.

  • Maintenance and repairs log
