Coverstitch machine — Janome CoverPro 2000CPX

Away for service since 10 October 2026 (together with both Juki overlockers). Ask in #textilrummet before planning to use it.

Coverstitch and chain-stitch machine for stretch hems (like T-shirt hems) and decorative stitching. Doesn't trim like an overlocker — prepare/fold the edge first.

Remove unused needles (don't just leave them unthreaded) and tighten the empty clamp screws (manual pp. 28–34).

Safety

  • Fingers clear of needles, foot and looper.

  • Unplug for threading, needle changes and cleaning.

  • No pins or thick seam crossings forced through.

  • Don't pull the fabric or force the wheel.

Needles and threading

  • Needles: EL × 705 only. Flat side to the back, fully up against the stop. The tips are staggered by design — don't realign them (p. 14).

  • Thread: cones on the holders; for small spools remove the cone holder, slit up, fit the cap. Extend the guide bar fully (p. 16).

  • Threading: unplug, raise the foot, turn the wheel towards you to raise the needles. Follow the separate route for each needle (pp. 20–22) and the looper (pp. 24–26). Needles threaded front to back. For the looper, pull the release knob, thread to the eye, leave ~100 mm to the rear, push it back. Close the cover.

How to use

  1. Unplug. Fit the needles for your stitch and thread them.

  2. Start settings: stitch length 3–3.5, differential 1.0, needle tensions 4, looper tension 3.

  3. Scrap under the foot, turn the wheel a few times by hand.

  4. Plug in, sew slowly. Check both sides and stretch the seam.

  5. Sew the project; use the guides so the underside covers the edge. Remove the extension table for sleeves.

Ending at an edge: sew onto a scrap piece, cut between. Pull the needle threads to the underside and knot.

Removing the fabric mid-seam (e.g. closed hems):

  1. Stop. Turn the wheel towards you until the needles are fully up.

  2. Raise the foot.

  3. Pull slack in the needle threads in front of the needle eyes (p. 40).

  4. Pull the fabric gently to the back, cut the threads, knot the tails.

Adjustments

  • Differential feed (0.5–2.25): above 1.0 for wavy stretch fabric, below 1.0 for puckered fine fabric (p. 12).

  • Looper tension lever: SOFT + length ≥ 3 for curling; TIGHT for skipped stitches (p. 36).

  • Foot pressure: line on the screw level with the top = normal; + for heavy, − for light (p. 10).

Troubleshooting

Problem

Action

Suddenly no seam

Unplug; looper thread has come out of its last guides/eye — rethread (pp. 24–26).

Skipped stitches

Needle type, seating, orientation; every guide. Then tension and looper lever.

Needle thread breaks

Snags, tension discs, needle condition.

Wavy, puckered, curling

Differential, then tension and stitch length.

Fabric won't come out

Needles fully up, foot up, slack in front of the needle eyes, pull to the back.

Seam unravels

Knot the tails; check for missed stitches.

Maintenance

  • Unplug, brush lint from the feed dogs and looper area. Full clean: remove foot, needles and needle plate (p. 46).

  • No oiling — the manual has no user oiling procedure.

  • Timing, looper and tension calibration: service technician.

  • Maintenance and repairs log
