Filament 3D Printing
This is the course for the filament printers in the 3D printing room: eight Bambu Lab X2Ds and two H2Ss. You learn how the printers and their AMS units work, the room's rules, and how to slice, start and finish a print on your own. Module 2 adds more materials, support and multi-colour printing, the filament dryers and nozzle changes.
🚧 This course is still being developed, and we'd love your feedback. If something could be clearer, explained better or put another way, select the text and use Comment to tell us right there: the wording, the facts, a rule, anything. A comment on the exact spot is the easiest feedback for us to act on.
Filament printers, also called FDM printers, build your object from a string of plastic that is melted in a hot nozzle and laid down layer by layer. The room's resin printer works differently and will have its own course, Resin 3D Printing.
Two modules
Module | Passing it lets you | Time |
|---|---|---|
Print ordinary PLA and Bambu PLA Silk+ (no other silk, filled or glow-in-the-dark PLA) on the four upper-row X2Ds, one spool at a time | about 50 minutes of reading, then a quiz of 25 questions | |
Module 2 — Materials, multi-material printing and the rest of the fleet | Everything else: the lower-row X2Ds, the H2Ss, allow-listed materials beyond PLA, support and multi-colour printing, the dryers, permitted nozzle changes | about 45 minutes of reading, then a quiz of 20 questions |
Which materials each printer takes: Allowed materials.
Everyone takes Module 1 first, even if you have printed before. It starts with how a printer works, so you don't need any experience, and it is also where you learn this room's own rules and routines.
Take Module 2 whenever it suits you. If you already print, do both back to back. If you are new, get comfortable with Module 1 first and come back after a few weeks of printing. The split is there to keep the first step small, not to make anyone wait.
How to take it
Open Module 1 — The room and your first print and read the lessons in order. Use the navigation table at the bottom of every page: Next ➡️ takes you to the next lesson.
Each module ends with a short summary of its rules and a link to the quiz. The summary is a reminder, not a shortcut: the quiz covers everything in the lessons.
Pass mark is 80 %.
The room's rules come first. Where the course differs from Bambu Lab's guides or a filament maker's recommendations, follow the course.
