Maintenance and repairs log — Solberga SVT 600
Repair and maintenance history for the Solberga SVT 600. Routine checks, cleaning, workholding and operating instructions are on the machine page.
Dated reports describe what was known at the time. A reported repair does not establish the present condition of every accessory or close a later fault. Outstanding checks are collected in Woodshop open questions.
17 September 2026 — Sanding incident reported
An incident during sanding was reported. The thread does not establish a technical cause or a defective machine part, and records no machine repair. Review the sanding setup and technique with an instructor; the machine guide retains the tool-rest-removal and entanglement precautions. Report.
17–19 July 2026 — Stiff chuck and workholding review
On 17 July, the Clubman SK100 was reported extremely stiff to open/close and unusable until internally cleaned. Cleaning followed by Dry Lube was proposed; no completed cleaning or test is recorded in that thread. Treat this as maintainer work, not permission to dismantle the shared chuck. Report/photo.
The SK100 chuck and taper adaptor in the July 2026 service report
The 19 July photographs were part of a longer discussion begun in June. They raised concerns about workpiece retention, the drawbar and the tailstock. The full follow-up matters: an instructor identified incorrect workholding in photo 1 and said a suitably formed tenon should be gripped by the jaws. He said the tailstock and drawbar had been fixed, and the underside tailstock nut should not need routine adjustment. A new chuck was suggested, but no purchase or fitting of a replacement is confirmed. These replies do not separately close the 17 July stiffness report. Photographs/concerns, workholding correction, tailstock repair confirmation, drawbar repair confirmation, new-chuck proposal.

Historical complaint photographs with member annotations. They are not approved setup examples or proof that every claimed fault was current; read the corrections above and the April repair entry.
Still to verify: confirm present chuck condition, sound retention and any completed replacement. Measure the installed spindle-nose thread, taper and adaptor before ordering. A reply about a relative's Solberga suggested an unusual M40-diameter/6-TPI spindle thread; that is not a measurement of this machine. The SK100 product-set thread in the inventory link is also not proof of the local spindle-nose thread.
16–23 June 2026 — Speed lock, drive centre and support concerns
Members reported that the speed setting sometimes unlocked and changed, that the spur drive centre was worn, and that support/workholding needed attention. Tailstock complaints in this discussion were addressed by the July repair clarification above. Status: no recorded completion for the specific speed-lock or worn-centre items. A new lathe, chuck and further tooling were discussed, not confirmed installed. Initial detailed report, specific June list.
25–28 May 2026 — Local setup and learning references
The local setup discussion confirms that the chuck must be retained by the drawbar and that the mechanical speed adjustment is made while running. The guide follows the photographed running-only plate marking; the electrical range-switch sequence still needs direct instruction. A printed Turning Wood with Richard Raffan, third edition, was recorded beside the lathe. Setup discussion, book reference.
11 April 2026 — Tailstock eccentric-lock repair
The eccentric bushing had turned around its shaft and caused binding; the centre nut was also stuck. The maintainer cleaned and repositioned the bushing, increased set-screw depth, used blue Loctite and added an end-retaining screw so the shaft could not be accidentally pulled out and its parts dropped.
Result reported: the body moves freely with the lever up and locks with the lever down, clear of the turning tool. A 13 April reply acknowledged the repair; the 19 July follow-up again confirmed it. This supersedes the earlier routine-underneath-nut workaround. Check locking before use and report a recurrence rather than dismantle the mechanism. Repair/photos.

8 April 2026 — Green-wood cleanup and wet-chip rule
A room maintainer clarified that green-wood turning is allowed, but wet chips must not be sucked into the shared dust extractor because they clog its filter. Moisture must be wiped from the machine and a thin protective beeswax/equivalent coat applied, preferably before green-wood work. Status: local material/care rule; no drive repair implied. Rule.
26 March–1 April 2026 — Belts replaced; chuck and drawbar rebuilt
A belt left its pulley and the spindle did not turn. The chuck had also been dismantled and two detent balls were missing. On 1 April, new belts were installed, the chuck reassembled and a minor drawbar repair completed. A separate report said the lathe and chuck were back in use. Failure/full thread, belt work, chuck/drawbar rebuilt, return-to-use report.
The chuck was reassembled with 5.5 mm detent balls after the spring slot was described as 6.0 mm. The maintainer noted the restored clicking action but did not confirm another functional improvement. This is a record of that repair, not a manufacturer parts specification. Detent-ball thread, reassembly result.
Still to verify: the upper replacement belt was reported slightly tight and a larger size might be needed. Rattling was thought to come from the two variator bearings, which were to be ordered/replaced; no completed bearing replacement was found. Confirm fit and cause before ordering or operating through abnormal noise.
7 March 2026 — Chuck and jaw inventory
A local inventory identified an Axminster Clubman SK100 and at least these jaw/accessory sets: Deep Grip Piranha jaws; 25 mm O'Donnell jaws; 10–250 mm button jaws; screw-chuck/faceplate-drive C jaws; and SK100 dovetail C jaws. This records the available accessories at that date, not their current condition or every safe gripping diameter. Inventory with product references.
50 mm O'Donnell jaws and 38 mm inserts were suggested for a possible gap around 44 mm stock, but purchase was not confirmed. Check the actual jaws, range, mounting and sound purchase with an instructor rather than assume round stock of a given diameter will fit safely. Proposal.
12–25 January 2026 — Emergency stop and stuck faceplate
A temporary emergency-stop repair was reported on 12 January and the stuck faceplate removed on 13 January. On 25 January, a replacement emergency-stop button was installed and the temporary one put in the maintenance box. Status: repairs reported complete at those dates. The faceplate must be removed before fitting the chuck; the thread explicitly says they cannot both be mounted. The later April tailstock repair supersedes the temporary January locking arrangement. Full thread, replacement switch/photo.

Repair record, not an electrical test certificate. Follow the current controls and instructor's procedure.
17–20 January 2026 — Turning tools broken and replaced
Tools broke during catches while bowl turning. The discussion questioned the use of a spindle roughing gouge for this work; an instructor must select the correct tool and teach its use. Replacements were ordered and new gouges added on 20 January. Status: replacement tools reported added; no approval of the incident's technique implied. Incident/full discussion, replacement tools/photo.

6 May 2020 — Variator mechanism secured and correct belts installed
The speed variator mechanism detached that morning. The maintainer reported it fixed and the correct belts installed, but also observed that the motor did not appear well aligned with the spindle. Status: dated repair report; no alignment measurement or completed alignment correction in this report. Later belt and variator work is recorded above. Repair report.
25 February 2020 — Speed lever renovation; older parts/service notes
The earlier machine page recorded the lathe “almost running” with its speed lever under renovation. It also listed tailstock alignment as a maintenance item. Status: the later 6 May 2020 report above records a variator repair and correct-belt installation, with motor/spindle alignment still questioned. It does not close the separate tailstock-alignment item. Later repairs are recorded above; do not use the old note as today's status.
Historical parts leads were A48 upper V-belt, A42 lower V-belt, and two 6202 sealed bearings, 15 × 35 × 11 mm, for the speed-lever mechanism. A spare belt set was claimed then; current stock and fitted sizes must be checked. The 6202-2RS supplier reference is an old parts lead, not proof of fitted parts.
The earlier local schedule called for weekly full-range speed exercise and annual spindle-bearing/variator cleaning and greasing. These are historical local notes, not a verified manufacturer schedule. Confirm the correct service procedure, lubricant and bearing design first; running-only variator exercise is maintainer work with a safe empty setup. Earlier local record.
September–October 2019 — Solberga acquisition and previous lathes retired
The Solberga purchase was arranged on 26 September and collection was planned for 1 October. The Luna SP-1000 was reported sold and gone on 29 September; a second old wood lathe was reported sold on 11 October. Identity note: the earlier 2018–February 2019 discussions about a large donated lathe, a 0.75 kW motor, proposed VFD and brake work concern a previous machine and do not describe this Solberga. Solberga purchase, collection plan, Luna departure, second old lathe sold.
