1.13 Faults, fire, and who to tell
Module 1 · Part 4: When something goes wrong · Lesson 13 of 14 · about 3 min
The three usual ways a print fails
A spaghetti failure: a print that has come loose, with strands of filament spilling around it
Adhesion failure: the part comes loose from the plate. Usually grease on the plate, or the wrong plate chosen in the slicer.
Warping: corners curl up as the plastic cools and shrinks. This is mostly a problem with materials that print hotter than PLA, which is one reason Module 1 is PLA only. Module 2 explains why it happens.
Spaghetti: the nozzle has lost contact with the part and is pushing plastic into the air. You may need to recognise this in other people's prints too (1.7 Taking over a printer).
Common problems
The Bambu Lab X2D page on the wiki links to a page of common problems and what to do about them.
What you may fix yourself
✅ Hard rule. Before you remove a screw or disconnect a wire, post in the Slack channel #3D-Skrivare and wait for a room developer or board member to reply.
You may follow Bambu Lab's official troubleshooting guides, on Bambu Lab's wiki (start from the X2D pages), as long as the fix needs no screws removed and no wires disconnected. Anything that involves unscrewing parts, disconnecting wires or a lot of spare parts is not forbidden, but you must post in the Slack channel #3D-Skrivare and wait for a room developer or board member to reply before you start, so the work can be coordinated. Taking a PTFE tube off is fine when the official guide says to, as long as you put it back as it was. Changing how the filament is routed is never a fix (1.4 Meet the AMS). Some guides include steps that are never done here, such as using an open flame or changing a nozzle on an X2D: stop there and ask in Slack.
A printer you can't fix
Two red 3D-printed tags reading "Out of order! Reported on Slack", made to clip onto a printer like a nametag
If a printer has a fault you can't fix yourself, report it in #3D-Skrivare: which printer, and what is wrong. Then put one of the red Out of order! Reported on Slack tags from the pegboard on the printer, where a nametag would go, so other members can see that it is out of order.
Never use a printer with a red tag on it.
Questions and other problems
Post in the Slack channel #3D-Skrivare. If it is urgent, tag @roomdev-3d in your message.
If there is a fire, smoke or an electrical fault
Deal with the danger first. If something is burning, warn the people around you and follow the makerspace's fire routine from the general safety course: get out and call 112. Use the nearest fire extinguisher or fire hose if it is safe to do so.
If it is safe to do so, switch the printer off and unplug it.
Then tell us in Slack straight away, and tag
@styrelsen(the board).
Where the power socket and switch are: low on the back of the printer, marked with a green arrow. Left: an X2D. Right: an H2S
The makerspace would rather teach than punish. Tell us when something breaks. That helps everyone far more than a problem nobody finds for three days.
