Speed selection

Power off and wait for the spindle to stop before moving the levers (plate: "BRYT STRÖMMEN VID VÄXLING").

Lever directions are seen from the front, facing the speed chart. Both levers always point upward — either up-right ↗ or up-left ↖.

Larger drills need lower speeds. Use the drill manufacturer's data for the material. Don't force a lever that won't engage.

Setup

  • On/off: motor-protection breaker in the box at the top of the column, in use since 2017 (the original head buttons have been removed). There is no separate emergency stop.

  • Quill return: spring-return kit by Mr3D, replacing the original counterweight.

  • Ceiling-secured: the drill press is fastened to the ceiling because the floor is thin concrete on sand. Don't move it or detach the fastening; report any looseness.

  • Table height: use the crank. Check that no cable is wound around the crank, and never force a locked adjustment. Moving the head requires separate instruction.

  • Spindle taper: MT3 according to Arboga's catalogue. Check the actual taper and arbor before buying tooling.

Safety

  • Eye and hearing protection. No gloves. Secure hair, sleeves, jewellery.

  • Clamp the workpiece and fix the vise/fixture to the table. Never hold work by hand.

  • Thin sheet metal can grab and spin as the drill breaks through — e.g. a 16 mm drill in 3 mm stainless has pulled work out of the vise. Clamp sheet firmly with backing and ask for help with large holes.

  • Remove the chuck key immediately after use.

  • Stop the machine before measuring, adjusting or clearing chips. Never stop the chuck by hand.

How to use

  1. Power off: select speed, adjust and lock the table, set the depth stop and check the drill can't reach the vise or table.

  2. Clamp the work and secure the vise/fixture. Support long stock.

  3. Fit the drill and tighten. Remove the chuck key.

  4. Start at the breaker box. Check the drill runs true — stop if it wobbles.

  5. Drill with steady feed and cutting fluid where needed. Clear chips from deep holes; ease off at breakthrough.

  6. Stop at the breaker box and wait for the spindle to stop.

  7. Brush/vacuum chips, return tooling, report faults.

Troubleshooting

Problem

Action

Work catches or spins

Stop immediately. Power off before releasing it. Rethink the clamping.

Drill wobbles or vibrates

Stop. Check the drill, chuck, arbor and clamping. Bent arbors have occurred before.

Table won't move / gear won't engage

Check the lock and cable clearance. Don't force it or use extension bars.

Drill or arbor stuck

Ask for help. Don't hammer the chuck.

Noise, heat, loose fastening, electrical fault

Stop, power off, report in #metallrummet.

Maintenance

  • Never fill the gearbox with oil — excess oil reaches the motor and damages it. Lubrication is a few drops of machine oil in the designated oil cups/holes only (instructions p. 2).

  • Keep the table, column and tooling clean and dry.

  • Internal work, bearings and electrical work are for maintainers.

  • Refurbished Feb–Mar 2018 (new SKF bearings, table welded and resurfaced, repainted): refurbishment project.

  • Maintenance and repairs log
