Module 1 โ€” The room and your first print

Filament 3D Printing ยท Module 1 of 2

  • Prerequisite: none

  • Time: about 50 minutes of reading, then a quiz of 25 questions

๐Ÿšง This course is still being developed, and we'd love your feedback. If something could be clearer, explained better or put another way, select the text and use Comment to tell us right there: the wording, the facts, a rule, anything. A comment on the exact spot is the easiest feedback for us to act on.

This is a self-study module. Read it, then take the Module 1 quiz. If you don't pass the quiz the first time, read the explanations and try again. You can retake it as many times as you like.

The room's rules come first. This course sets the rules for this room. Where they differ from Bambu Lab's guides or a filament maker's recommendations, follow the course.

What passing Module 1 lets you do

Everything else in the room needs Module 2: the lower-row X2Ds, the H2S printers, every other material, support material, multi-colour printing, the filament dryers and nozzle changes.

What you need before your first job

  1. You have read this module and passed its quiz.

  2. Your filament spools have your member label on them.

You will also need a nametag, but you do not have one yet: printing your own nametag is your first job after passing this module (1.5 Nametags and taking turns).

If you have printed before

Nobody is grandfathered in: everyone takes the same modules. Some habits from other printers don't carry over:

You can do both modules back to back. If you are new to printing, get a few weeks of printing behind you first and then come back for Module 2. The two modules are there to make it easy to get started, not to make anyone wait.

What this module does not cover

  • Materials other than PLA, and printers other than the upper-row X2Ds. That is Module 2.

  • Designing your own models. This module is about printing a file you already have, correctly and safely.

  • Resin printing. The resin equipment has its own course and authorization.

  • General fire and evacuation procedure. That is in the makerspace's general safety course.

5โ€“6

Claiming a printer, and which filament you may use and where it lives

3. Your print, step by step

7โ€“12

Everything from a free printer to a cleaned-up one, in the order you do it

4. When something goes wrong

13

Who to tell, and what you may fix yourself

5. Putting it together

14

A print job, step by step, on one page

1.14 Doing a print at a glance, at the end, sums up a print job on one page. Come back to it once you have read the rest.

The most important rules are shown in boxes, so you can't miss them. A tick โœ… marks something you must always do, and a stop sign โ›” something you must never do:

โœ… Hard rule. Something you must always do.

โ›” Hard rule. Something you must never do.

Not every rule gets a box. The list at the end of the module collects the rules in short form, but it is a reminder, not a replacement: the quiz covers the whole module.
