Spindle lock

Plug-it cable: connect only with the mains plug out; twist fully to lock.

Safety

  • Eye and hearing protection, dust mask. No gloves. Secure hair, sleeves, jewellery.

  • Clamp the work to a stable bench. Clamps outside the cutter path.

  • Both hands on the handles.

  • Unplug before changing cutters, adjusting guides, clearing chips or cleaning.

  • Wait for the cutter to stop before lifting the router away (the brake shortens, but doesn't eliminate, rundown).

  • Feed against the rotation: counter-clockwise around an outside edge, clockwise inside an opening. Never climb-cut.

Changing the cutter

  1. Unplug.

  2. Use the collet matching the shank. ¼" needs the 6.35 mm collet, not 6 mm. The collet must be clipped into the nut before fitting.

  3. Press the spindle lock, turn until it engages, use the 19 mm spanner.

  4. Insert the cutter at least to its minimum mark — grip on the plain shank, not the flutes.

  5. Tighten. Never tighten an empty collet.

Removing: the nut loosens, then meets a second resistance as it pulls the collet out — keep turning. If the cutter won't release, ask for help; don't hammer or pry.

Setting depth

  1. Unplugged, base flat on the work. Release the depth-rod lever. Release the plunge lock, lower until the cutter touches, lock the plunge.

  2. Lower the rod onto a turret stop, set the pointer to zero.

  3. Raise the rod by the cut depth, lock it. Fine-tune with the green dial.

  4. Release the plunge. Test on scrap and measure.

Deep cuts: use the turret stops for several passes. Finish with a light pass.

Never exceed the cutter's rated speed. Burning = dull/dirty cutter, too deep, wrong speed or lingering.

How to use

  1. Set guide, depth and speed. Check the route unplugged.

  2. Start extraction, then the router with the cutter clear of the work.

  3. Plunge to the stop and lock the plunge with the round handle.

  4. Feed steadily against the rotation, base flat, guide against its reference.

  5. At the end, release the trigger, wait for standstill, then release the plunge.

Tips:

  • Rout end grain first, then long grain, when doing all four edges. A backer block reduces tear-out.

  • Narrow work: clamp a support of the same height so the base can't tip.

  • Check depth after a test pass — if it changes, check plunge lock, depth-stop clamp and collet.

Guides and jigs

  • Parallel fence: lock the guide rods securely.

  • Guide rail: needs the OF 1010 rail adapter and height support. Keep ≥ 5 mm between rail edge and cutter.

  • Copying rings: screw on from below, centre with a centring cone. Offset = (ring Ø − cutter Ø) ÷ 2. A 30 mm Festool 486033 ring is available.

  • MaKoen circle jig: on its wall holder. Mount per p. 18 of the MaKoen manual. Radius setting: opening = radius − cutter radius; disc = radius + cutter radius. See Jigs for woodworking.

Troubleshooting

Problem

Action

Depth varies

Unplug; check plunge lock, stop rod clamp, guide and collet.

Cutter stuck

Use the two-stage release. If that fails, ask for help.

Burning, chatter, rough finish

Check cutter, feed, speed, clamping and depth.

Chips clog the extraction

Unplug and clear.

Vibration, damaged cable, faulty switch

Stop, mark as faulty, report.

Motor stops in a heavy cut

Unplug, let it cool, take a lighter cut.

Maintenance

  • Unplug, brush/vacuum chips from base, plunge columns, collet and vents.

  • Return router, cutters, collets, spanner and jig hardware. Coil the cable loosely.

  • Internal and electrical repairs: qualified service only.

  • Maintenance and repairs log
