Turn off the dust collection system when you leave

As important as it is to turn on the dust collection system before using any machine, it is equally important to turn the dust collection system off when the last person leaves the wood room. As the dust collection system gets warm when running, and is full of dust, there is a real risk of fires starting, and we do not want that to happen when there is no-one present.

When you leave the room, ensure all valves for dust collection are closed, so that the dust collector turns off. If this does not work, turn off the dust collector using the switch on the side.

Storage

Along most walls, you will see blue metal bars sticking out from the walls. These are for storing your building material. Mark your material with the usual sticker and you can store it the standard 60 days.

In the corner, there are shelves dedicated to drying glue. Mark your items with the special 48h sticker. Members may move items after 48h.

It can also be a good idea to read through our general storage rules.

What machines need a course

Almost all machines in the wood room cut wood in one way or another, as such, they are all dangerous if not used properly. It is your responsibility to find information about how to safely use the machines that you want to use. YouTube is a fantastic resource for this.

In addition to this, some machines are sensitive and can break if not used properly. For these, a special course is needed.

Each machine has a sign explaining some basic information about it. The signs are colour-coded as a guide.

  • A green sign means the machine has a low risk of serious injury is using common sense.
  • An orange sign means that the there is a high risk of serious injury if you use it incorrectly.
  • A red sign means that the machine requires a course to use. Most often, this is because the machine can be damaged if not used properly.

In the woodroom, there are four machines that require a course.

  • The two bandsaws, EJCA, green and Pela, red: They have an online course you can take by scanning the QR code on the sign of the respective bandsaws.
  • The tormek t8 wetgrinder: This also has an online course.
  • The table saw: It requires an in-person course as using it the wrong way can cause damage to it or you.

Issues: How to report and resolve

If you see an issue that you cannot fix, join the Makerspace Slack and report it in the #trärummet channel or join the Facebook group "Stockholm Makerspace" and report it there.

Which surfaces to use for drilling and gluing

When drilling, do not put the material you want to drill directly on any of the work surfaces. Preferably, make sure that there is nothing underneath the point where you are drilling, for example by having the work piece stick out a bit from the work surface you are working on.

If this is not possible, place a sufficiently thick piece of wood underneath the piece you want to drill in.

Gluing should preferably be done on a piece of paper to protect the work surfaces, and should under no circumstanced be done on the surfaces of the large machines.

Shared consumables: What can be used

The Makerspace provides basic consumables like wood glue, sandpaper, router bits etc. You may use these freely.

However, for best results, consider bringing your own as the shared consumables may have run out or be of low quality when you arrive.

Safety equipment

Outside the wood room is a shelf with ear protection and safety glasses that you can borrow.

If you have long hair, or flowing clothes, make sure to tuck these away before working to avoid the machines grabbing them and pulling you in.

Hearing and eye protection outside the wood room

Where to empty the garbage bins

There are a total of 4 bins that need regular emptying. Make it a habit to empty one of them when you leave.

The are:

  • The dust collection system.
  • The large dustbin in the middle of the room.
  • The small blue bin by the mitre-saw station.
  • The vacuum cleaner. The dust bag is reusable, so empty it into the large dust bin and put it back.

What materials are allowed

Allowed materials:

  • Clean and dry wood
  • Plastics that do not melt when cut

Not allowed materials:

  • Metal of any kind. Will dull the cutting blades.
  • Stone or gypsum of any kind: Will dull the blades and clog the filters
  • Preassure-treated wood. The dust is poisonous
  • Recycled/Reclaimed wood. Wood of this kind may have small stones or nails embedded which will dull the cutting blades.
