Help / faults

Squaring timber

  1. Joint one face flat.

  2. Joint one edge with the flat face against the fence.

  3. Thickness with the flat face down.

Mark the reference face and edge. The thicknesser alone won't straighten a twisted board — it copies the face underneath.

Materials

  • Yes: clean, dry solid wood, planed along the grain.

  • No:

    • end grain (including end-grain cutting boards)

    • pallet wood, reclaimed flooring or decking, concrete formwork timber

    • pressure-treated, wet or green wood

    • metal, plastic, MDF, plywood or other boards

    • wood with nails, screws, sand, loose knots or splits

  • Glued or epoxied work: cured at least 24 h (and the full curing time of the glue).

  • Thin strips: use the thin-strip carrier from Jigs for woodworking — get it demonstrated first.

Safety

  • Eye and hearing protection, dust mask. No gloves. Secure hair, clothing and jewellery.

  • Hands at least 150 mm from the cutterhead. Never press directly over it. Use push blocks.

  • Cover the unused width of the cutter with the guard.

  • Power off and wait for standstill before changing mode, adjusting, measuring, clearing jams or cleaning.

  • Never bypass an interlock.

  • Stand out of the kickback path when thicknessing.

Jointing

  1. Power off. Lower the hinged table and push its handle fully down to lock it.

  2. Fit the brown collection box under the cutter and connect extraction.

  3. Clamp the fence at the angle you need. For square edges, check with a square at both infeed and outfeed. If they don't agree, report it.

  4. Set a light cut on the infeed table. Adjust the guard to the stock.

  5. Open the extraction gate, start extraction, start the machine.

  6. Push the stock steadily with push blocks. Once enough is on the outfeed table, move your downward pressure there. Don't press a bowed board flat.

  7. Light passes until the face is flat, then joint an edge against the fence.

Thicknessing

  1. Power off. Lift the hinged jointing table. Swing the extraction hood over the cutter and lock it.

  2. Fit the yellow connector and extraction hose. Check the anti-kickback fingers move freely.

  3. Set the table for a light cut. Don't take too much per pass, especially with wide boards and heavy wood such as oak: half a turn of the crank (1 mm) per pass is a good rule of thumb.

  4. Flat face down. Feed lever to 1 (on).

  5. Start extraction and the machine, then feed the stock in. Let the rollers pull it — don't push, pull or reach in.

  6. At the outfeed: keep thumbs off the board edge — fingers can be pinched between the board and the fence rail.

  7. Power off before measuring. Several light passes. Support long boards level with the table to avoid snipe.

Finishing

Switch off, wait for standstill, disconnect power. Clean tables and floor (brush/vacuum, not compressed air). Put push blocks away.

Troubleshooting

Problem

Action

Won't start

Check stop buttons and that the hood/guard is seated. Don't bypass.

Stock stops or feeds unevenly

Power off. Resin on rollers or drive problem. Don't push harder.

Rough surface, chatter, vibration

Check the stock; report possible damaged inserts.

Repeated ridge on the surface

Damaged insert — report.

Twisted output or uneven thickness

Report — alignment or setup issue.

Extraction leaks or blocks

Stop, power off, clear safely.

Cutterhead

  • Sheartak spiral head (installed Feb 2022), 55 carbide inserts, 4 edges each.

  • Inserts: 15 × 15 × 2.5 mm, R150 curved edge. Not interchangeable with other 15 mm inserts.

  • Rotating/replacing inserts is maintainer work: clean the pocket, use a matching insert and screw, torque 5.42–5.88 Nm with the torque tool, mark the edge in use, test.

  • The factory manual's knife-setting instructions don't apply.

Maintenance

  • Keep tables and rollers free of resin.

  • Keep the flat feed belt free of oil and grease. Lubricate only the transmission points.

  • Feed parts: 8 × 340 mm flat belt, 1012 needle bearings.

  • Motor replaced Jan 2021. Feed drive repaired Sept 2026.

  • Alignment, transmission and electrical work: maintainers only.

  • Maintenance and repairs log
