Belt sander — Scheppach BSM 2010
Wood room course required. Wood only — no metal, not even wood with brass fittings (sparks in the dust extraction).

Materials
Yes: clean, dry wood.
No: metal (incl. wood with metal fittings), wet sanding.
Small or thin pieces: use a jig — don't hold tiny parts next to the belt.
Setup
Belts: on the wall holder above the sander. 60 grit for shaping, 120 grit for removing saw marks and finishing. Check the label and the fitted belt.
Extraction: main hose at the left end. A black auxiliary hood for the rounded right end hangs on the wall to the right — get instruction on fitting it.
Controls: tension lever releases the belt; separate knob adjusts tracking.
Drawers below: shared drill bits, hole saws and router bits (router bits belong to the router table). Return everything to its marked place.

Safety
Eye and hearing protection, dust mask. No gloves. Secure hair, clothing and jewellery.
Keep hands away from the belt and from where the belt meets the rollers.
Table and stop close to the belt and locked, so the work can't be pulled in.
Unplug for belt changes, tilting, table adjustment, clearing jams and cleaning.
Exception: small tracking adjustments with the external knob while running — only if you've been shown how, guards closed, no work on the belt.
Don't force the work; don't use a damaged, slipping or wandering belt.
How to use
Check the belt for tears, frayed edges or a bad joint. Check cable, covers, tables, stop and extraction.
Unplugged: set orientation, table height/angle and stop. Check angles with a square.
Start extraction, then the sander. Check the belt tracks straight and in the right direction (arrow on belt matches arrow on machine).
Hold the work firmly against the table/stop. Light pressure; move the work across the belt.
Lift the work off before switching off. Wait for standstill before changes or cleaning.
Horizontal: use the flat section and end stop. Don't let an edge catch under the stop.
Vertical: lower the height-adjustable table fully before tilting. Support the assembly while pivoting; keep fingers out of the gaps. Lock it before starting.
Don't sand with the long table at 45° — extraction doesn't work in that position.
Troubleshooting
Problem | Action |
|---|---|
Belt runs off-centre or rubs | Stop. Report, unless you've been shown the tracking procedure. |
Belt slips or slows | Less pressure. If it continues, check tension. |
Belt seam damaged or edges frayed | Stop and replace the belt. |
Wood burns, poor finish | Less pressure; belt may be worn or wrong grit. |
Won't start, noise, repeated trips | Stop and report. |
Dust escaping or extraction blocked | Stop and fix safely. |
Changing the belt
Unplug.
Release tension — turn the tension lever 180°.
Loosen the cover knob about two turns and open the cover. Move the stop and extraction fitting out of the way.
Fit a 2000 × 150 mm belt with the arrow on the inside matching the running direction.
Re-tension, refit stop, hood and guards. Check tracking.
Store belts without sharp folds — hang on a support at least 50 mm in diameter, never a nail.
Maintenance
Unplug, vacuum dust and keep tables free of resin. No aggressive cleaners.
Drive belt and internal repairs: maintainers only. Electrical: electrician only.
